Career Opera:
Peter began his opera career at the Santa Fe Opera, where for four seasons starting in 1979 he was the assistant to the resident designer Craig Miller. In his third year there, Peter was given a revival to remount, and in his fourth year, he was given his own new production to design. That production led to his designing a season of operas at the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. which in turn led to a season of operas for Opera Theater St. Louis where he became the resident designer for seven seasons (1982 through 1987). In those seven seasons, he worked with such directors as Dr. Jonathan Miller, Graham Vick, Robert Carsen, Colin Graham, Stephen Wadsworth and Francesca Zambello among many others.
Through the 80’s and 90’s, Peter designed for most of America’s regional and resident opera companies. He has designed productions for the Metropolitan Opera, LAMCO, San Francisco Opera, San Diego Opera, Minnesota Opera, Houston Grand, Dallas Opera, Opera Omaha, Tulsa Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, and Seattle Opera, where Peter designed Stephen Wadsworth’s production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle which premiered in 2001.
Abroad, Peter has designed operas at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opera/North, Scottish Opera, the Edinburgh Festival, in Florence for Maggio Musicale, in Venice at La Fenice, at L’Arena di Verona, Cagliari, Bonn, Lisbon, Tokyo.
